How much can you save by charging your EV off-peak?

What off-peak charging means

Off-peak charging simply means running your EV charger during the hours when electricity is cheapest — usually overnight, or whenever wholesale prices dip. On time-of-use and EV tariffs the off-peak rate can be a fraction of the daytime rate.

Why the gap is so large

Overnight demand is low and there is often surplus wind, so wholesale prices fall. Suppliers package this into dedicated EV tariffs. For example, some UK EV tariffs offer roughly 7–9p/kWh overnight versus a standard rate near 25–27p, and Irish smart EV plans put the night rate under 12c/kWh against a day rate around 29c.

An EV is one of the largest single loads in a home, so charging it in the cheap window rather than at peak makes a big difference to the annual bill.

A simple worked example

Say you add 200 kWh a month to your car. At a 27c/kWh day rate that is about €54. At an 11c/kWh off-peak rate it is about €22 — a saving of roughly €32 a month, or nearly €400 a year, for the same driving.

Actual figures depend on your tariff, car and mileage; the point is that when you charge matters as much as how much you charge.
